Hosted by LTS of TURKEY, IASGO CME Course, İstanbul was held in Florence Nightingale Hospital and Cevahir Hotel

Having recently included Istanbul and the Liver Transplantation Society as its representative to the project, the first İstanbul Organization of CMEC (Continuing Medical Education Centers), initiated by the IASGO (The International Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Oncologists), was organized between September 29 and 30, 2011, with remarkable participation.

The course was organized with the support of Novartis and  Florence Nightingale Hospital and received a great deal of attention. The course, which is generally limited to 15 participants, tried hard to increase its quota due to huge demand, and 28 28 doctor from different specialization ( hepatology, surgery, gastroenterology, anesthesiology, radiology) of whom 20 were foreigners, had the chance to take the course. Countries attending the course included Bulgaria, Romania, Sudan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, India, Ethiopia, Macedonia and Turkey. The course, provided under the heading, “Liver Transplantation – An Interdisciplinary Approach To LDLT”, was very effective according to statements from participants in terms of both theoretical and particularly hands-on training that took place in the Organ Transplantation Center, Florence Nightingale Hospital. Participants circulated through micro-rotation in units such as surgery, radiology, intensive care and hepatology during the day in groups of seven, had the chance to visit the service floor at the end of the day, and received lab coats and scrubsuits as presents from the Florence Nightingale Hospital.

Although Prof. N.J Lygidakis, Secretary General of IASGO, could not attend due to health problems as a last minute surprise Prof. Massimo Malago was able to attend the course to share his invaluable experience in this subject matter and thereby enriched the course by his participation.

The results of the questionnaire that were carried out at the end of the course showed not only how successful the training was, but also gave an idea about the expectations from these kinds of future projects. According to the results of the questionnaire filled-in by 25 participants:

  • 1/3 of the course participants were informed about this course through IASGO, 1/3 of them through the Liver Transplantation Society, and the rest through their professors;
  • All participants agreed that the course completely met their expectations. (In the comments section, there were even notes indicating that the course was beyond most of the participants’ expectations);
  • All participants agreed that the length of the course was short. They indicated that it would be more useful if it were a minimum 3 to maximum of 5 days;
  • Common views on the high quality of the course were available;
  • Participants demanded that time for ‘Hands on training’ should be longer;
  • Almost all participants recommended this course to their colleagues;
  • the average scale score of the course was found quite high: 9.1
